If you are scheduled for a procedure at Midwest endoscopy Services you will need to prepare for your examination. You should receive specific instructions tailored to your medical conditions in the mail prior to your procedure date. If you did not receive this information or have misplaced the instructions, some general instructions are given below.
If you do not have a prescription for a bowel preparation, you will need to call the office or on call physician to help you.
For an upper endoscopy the only preparation is to not eat or drink anything after midnight the night prior to the procedure.
For a colonoscopy you will require a formal bowel preparation. It is very important that you finish the entire preparation. Nulytely is one of the most common types of bowel preparation. It comes in a one gallon container.
1. Please call your pharmacy to see that they have your Nulytely prep in stock before you pick it up. (Some pharmacies will have to order this 2-3 days in advance)
2. You must have a driver to take you home from the procedure.
3. On the day before your procedure, in the morning, you should fill the Nulytely container to the line with water and place the it in your refrigerator.
4. On the day before your procedure, starting as soon as you awaken in the morning, you will need to stay on a clear liquid diet. Clear liquids include anything you can hold up to the light and see through. Do not drink anything red or purple. Examples of acceptable clear liquids are: apple juice, white grape juice, ginger-ale, 7Up, weak coffee or tea, chicken or beef broth, Gatorade, Jell-O (without added fruit) and water. You must drink plenty of fluids throughout the day
5. At 4:00 P.M. the night before your procedure, you will need to start consuming the Nulytely preparation. You should drink one glass every 10-20 minutes, which should take a total of three to five hours. You need to finish the entire contents of the Nulytely preparation. If you begin to feel nauseated, take one Reglan tablet, wait 20-30 minutes then resume drinking Nulytely. You may take the other Reglan tablet six hours after the first tablet. Sometimes taking a one hour break from the bowel preparation will allow the nausea to pass. After the nausea has passed, keep taking the preparation. You need to finish the entire contents of the Nulytely preparation.
If you still cannot finish the Nulytely, you will need to call the office or on call physician to help you.
6. You may have clear liquids until 3 hours before you are scheduled to arrive for your procedure.
7. Unless you receive special instructions take your medications as usual the day before and the day of the procedure. If you have problems while taking your preparation, please call one of our offices and the doctor on call will assist you.
